Gender in Media

Q We are all surrounded by the media-possibly even fully immersed in it, yet rarely take the opportunity to examine it critically. To do so, peruse some of their favorite magazines for images or examine television commercials and advertisements that “say” something about gender. Use this forum to describe the ad that you've chosen (you may even upload a photo if you'd like, as long as it is appropriate for all ages). What does the image tells us about socially constructed appropriate gender roles, feminine and masculine standards of appearance (i.e. ideal standards of beauty), sexuality, and so on? Also, look for themes of objectification, violence, compulsory heterosexuality, and similar themes - anything you think can be discussed.

The media, while trying to get better, is still demonstrating with commercials, ads, and shows/movies historically typical gender roles. Some people may not have issues with these demonstrations of “female”/”male” traits, characteristics, stereotypes, etc., and others are simply appalled. We can acknowledge that it exists because this is how cultures and societies around the world have traditionally behaved and treated gender roles and how some cultures and societies around the world still do treat gender roles. While one culture may be appalled at that treatment or behaviors, others are accepting. It is really a matter of beliefs and opinions.
